Game:  SFA4 #107   Turn: 3  Impulse: 32 Status: ISC VICTORY!

Web page last updated around 10/14/98

In Corner #1: Weighing 174,000 tons, Representing the proud crusaders pledged to return the rightful Kzinti Emperor (with a name like "The Usurper" he's *GOT* to be the real Emperor, right?) to the throne, Captain John Trauger (AKA Vorlon) in the WYN Great Black Shark TC

In Corner #2: Weighing 182,000 tons, Representing the Galaxy's busybodies and collective pokers of noses into things which don't concern them and could get said noses clawed off, Captain Jonathan Kiang (AKA Hemlock) in the ISC TCC

I'm not web-meistering this game.  The moderator is doing that himself.

This almost a mirror-image of 4023 above.  Only this time *I'm* in the WYN and my opponent's the ISC.  What are the odds?  Hey Maj, can we compare notes now?

In fact, I have  half-cribbed a page from Maj's playbook, playing coy on turn 1.  As a result, it has moved on swift feet.

Turn 1
IMP 1: Me: Speed 16.  Him: speed 17. I have opted to surf near the map edge headed for the upper-left corner.
IMP17: Me: still speed 16.  Him: announcing change to speed 31.  OK, if he holds this pose for the rest of the game, that's 24 for movement, 4 for housekeeping, minimum 4 for torps and PPD.  Total: 32.  Add 2 (at least) for special shuttles and we're at 34.  4 (or less) points of power unaccounted for.
IMP24: Yep.  He's still holding speed 31. Makes you wonder what odds and ends he spent for.  Tractors maybe?  Nah.  Only Randy Steck does that....
IMP 32 Swingandamiss with the PPD at range 16.  I hit with disruptors, but they went negative against his reinforcement.
In an alternate universe, the disr shot was run as if at range 15 in that other timeline, 3 disr's hit and did 4 through the reinforcement, making it 5.  That fills in a few blanks.  Lesee.  movement = 9+8+6=23 + 4 housekeeping +2 PPD +2 min for plasmas +5 for reinforcement and we have (carry the 6...) 36.  That STRONGLY suggests 2 for special shuttles.  How quaint.  He popped off a G-torp at the end of the round, just to make a statement.

Turn 2
IMP 8: OK, he got the PPD in gear on turn 1.  Still at range 16 though.  I'm going 14 and he's going 17.  I'm kinda trying to let the torp run out before chasing the ISC guy.  Somehow, I miscalculated the time I needed to turn and the 3 pulses all bit the same shield (6)

I keep getting the feeling that G-torp is a fake though.  The ISC has turned to F and he is not moving that fast, like he has the real G and real F to use to discourage pursuit.  To phaser or not to phaser?  That is the question.  I'll wish I did if I don't and that torp's real... At least the PPD didn't chew on the same shield as the torp's gonna hit...
IMP 12: He's kicked up to speed 24 running away.  I don't move again until AFTER the torp hits.  I'm putting my phasers where my mouth is and I'm letting it hit although I'm wondering if this is as wise as I thought it was.  Still, they say when you take the SAT go with your first answer.  Don't second-guess yourself. My first impression is that this thing was a pseudo.  We'll find out soon enough.  At least it's down to 15...

IMP 16:
ACK!  The plasma was real!  Just what I would have done. Don't toss off your pseudoes until you have to.  Now to pursue him and make him pay.  He kicked up to 26 so he's scooting across the board pretty as you please, but the only plasma he can toss at me is his lateral F.  Fortunately I have plenty of unfired phasers...

IMP 19.  Can't let him have all the high-speed fun.  Going up to 28!
IMP 28:  Guess this ISC is a spoilsport.  He checked a enveloping G at me, which I absolutely CANNOT afford to dodge.  Let it hit without weapons fire because I have bigger fish to fry and because it wouldn't down a shield.  Tough way to go about it.  Now I have a F-torp inbound I will HAVE to phaser...

Turn 3
IMP10: I wasn't sure whether he was gonna try to make a break for it or star castle, so I couldn't afford to reinforce.  I came out of the gun at speed 20, the high-end of my turn mode, dropping to 19 around IMP 8.   It Looks like he went for a bit of both.  He was stopped for the first 8 impulses, pivoting to face me and he fired the PPD when I hit range 8.  Figuring it was overloaded, I slipped back out to range 9, bringing the fulsade to an abrupt stop (It WAS overloaded), then started closing again. He knocked down the tattered remnants of my #1 shield with 3 P-1s, holding the rest back for my drones, I assume.  He's also chucked a 20-point torp at me that I'm 90% sure is a pseudo, but not 100%

So far, Hemlock has run his ISC mostly the way I would have.  Especially turns 1 and 2. The place where his style deviates from mine is the decision to retrograde.  I would have probably just sat still and weaseled the drones, taking my chances with a toe-to-toe slugfest.  If I catch him, I can probably make life pretty hard for him, but he has done a good job of forcing me to keep my distance with torps and DF weapons.  I have this mental picture of him throwing all these toys at me while yelling "Stay away! Stay away!"  The similarity in tactics is also why I expect his torp is a pseudo.  it's what I would do.
12: AAK!!!  I thought he launched that torp to direction F, but it went in E! My whole plan for dealing with it is ruined!  I sure *hope* it's a pseudo *now*...

It's these kinda mistakes which are why I don't have an Ace card...

Now he launches a second torp from the same tube.  I feel very strongly this first one is a fake.  Worse, I can't afford to divide my phaser fire...

IMP 14: I went with my gut and I was right this time.  I plowed right through...nothing.  But now the REAL torp is bearing down on my poor 11-boxx shield 6 (with Shield 1 down at Shield 2 at 2 boxes this is a BIG concern)  So...
I shot almost my full wad at it. All 5 P-3's and 4 P-1's.  Did 43 and obliterated the torp.  That's slightly above average, which a quick head-calc says is 39 2/3.  Actually given the central tendency inherent in 9 D6 rolls, that's DECENTLY above average.  Nice to have my weapons officer back.  Maybe we can pull this one out.
IMP 21: I actually got a drone hit!  Shield 6.  He played the percentages, rolled bad, there you are.
IMP 23: Next impulse will be the moment of truth.  I've been ducking and dodging behind my #6 to get here and now I've got it.  I'll get range 1 next impulse.  He's trying to make is hard on me by launching a SS or pseudo-SS into that hex.  Well, I saved some P-1's for a reason, boyo...Scratch one shuttle (and it was a *real* Suicide Shuttle too)

And now the moderator is gone (for a while)  AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!  What a time to be in limbo!
IMP 24: Here we are.  The impulse I've been waiting for.  Drum roll, please...
The tractor auction has started...
GOTCHA!!!

But he only resisted with 2 power...  Hmmmm....
IMP 25:  I drop a shuttle on him and suddenly he's going -10 again, just in time to dodge the thing.  Coincidence?  I think not.  So I shot him with a quick disruptor.
IMP 26: Turned to bring shield 1 to face.  Originally, I'd have thought he'd wait until the end of turn.
IMP 28: ...And into the slot go the 3 drones.  Now, they're off the same shield I am...
IMP 29: 2 drones tractored, 1 impact.  Oh, 7 reinforcement? here, have a P-1...  There, now you're down to 18.  Much better.  But you've got those nice 4 P-3's left to fire.  They look like they're just ACHING to fire at some drones.  Here.  have a couple of speed-20s...
IMP 30: which he promptly phasered into oblivion
IMP 31: What's this?  Another shuttle?  And coming right at me.  It's got to be a weasel reconfigured as a pseudo-seeking weapon, right?  We'll just dodge it to be sure tho...
IMP 32 Wrong. It WAS a suicide shuttle.  I can't believe this guy would go into a fight with a drone-user without toting any weasels.  He sideslipped so my straight-ahead movement would take me right into the shuttle's launch hex.  I took a break after his movement and turned straight.  Since we can't move 2 hexes in 1 turn, I'm safe, right?  Wrong.  Turns out there's an obscure tractor beam rule that says if you're tractored, any seeking weapons you launch will be herded directly to you by the tractor beam, moving as you move because they're "inside the tractor tunnel".  So when I turned to dodge the thing I was simply exposing my (dead) #1 shield to the thing.  WHAM!  OUCH!

I could have been bloody-minded and fought on, but I lost a SECOND disruptor, the drone rack that recycled on IMP 1, plus 3 more warp.  I can tell how this was going to go, especially with my down shield pointing at my enemy.  I'd likely have my drone racks miziaed off before they can fire.  I'd do moderate damage to the ISC, but I'd take that or worse from his plasmas.

I know when I'm beat.  Good job, Hemlock.  You played as good or better than I would have under the same circumstances.
